NZ could save billions by simply changing when we use electricity

A recent report commissioned by New Zealand’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has highlighted a surprisingly simple opportunity: we could save billions just by changing when we use electricity.
The analysis found that up to a quarter of peak electricity demand could be shifted to off-peak times. According to EECA, this would reduce pressure on the network, avoid costly infrastructure upgrades, and ultimately lower costs for both households and businesses.
At Ivory Egg, we are delighted to have been a part of the EECA and EEA projects, which have helped demonstrate these kinds of outcomes in practice.
The challenge is that electricity demand isn’t evenly spread throughout the day. It spikes at certain times, especially in the morning and evening, when people are heating their homes, cooking, or using appliances. The network, however, has to be built to handle these short peak periods.
The opportunity lies in shifting some of that demand to quieter times.
In many cases, this doesn’t require major changes. Simple technologies such as smart controls for hot water systems, heat pumps, or other electrical loads can automatically run outside peak hours, often without any impact on comfort.
That’s where building automation becomes really valuable.
With the right systems in place, energy use can be optimised in the background. Heating can be pre-programmed, loads can be managed more efficiently, and buildings can respond to demand without users even noticing.
While households have a big role to play, the report also highlights opportunities across commercial and industrial sectors, especially where flexibility can be introduced without affecting operations.
As electricity demand continues to grow, this kind of approach becomes increasingly important. It’s not just about generating more energy, but about using it more intelligently.
At Ivory Egg, we see this as a key part of the future of smart buildings. The technology to enable smarter energy use already exists. The next step is applying it in the right way. We can show you how to achieve the best energy outcomes for your clients, feel free to get in touch with our team.
